In my last post I told you how an old friend came to visit and let me know my furniture wasn’t ruined by my kids, but rather it was actually shabby chic. Who knew? One other thing I took from her visit was how different my life is now compared to when we were close friends ten years ago.
Obviously I’ve known that my life since becoming married with children was nothing like it was at twenty three years old, but when your past is sitting next to you, the differences seem more striking.
Here I am THEN, enjoying myself in Mexico on a cruise and perky enough to rest a shot glass between my girls:
And here’s me NOW, well last year, with no make up and little hope of surviving Spring Break. Even with the large mug of coffee no one would have called me, or the girls, perky.
Here are some other obvious contrasts between then and now:
Then: I loved Jello shots.
Now: I love drinking my Jello Instant Pudding through a straw before it sets.
Then: OMG! The sun is coming up! Time to get to bed!
Now: OMG! The sun is coming up! Time to get out of bed!
Then: A leisurely nap was always refreshing.
Now: Some nights the two or three hours of sleep feels more like a nap than an actual good night’s rest.
Then: Spring Break meant a week of booze, wild kids, and the week always went by too fast.
Now: Spring break means a week of Excedrin, wild kids and one week feels like an eternity.
Then: On a crazy night out, I might make the mistake of mixing liquor and beer.
Now: Oh, I still mix…my lights and my darks in the same load of laundry.
Then: The world was my playground.
Now: The playground is my playground.
Then: I enjoyed daytime TV dramas like All My Children and General Hospital with their love triangles, crazy family dynamics and bitter rivalries.
Now: I enjoy daytime TV dramas like Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street and can’t wait to see what Swiper the fox will swipe next and discover Mr. Noodles crazy antics of the day on Elmo’s World.
Then: A spontaneous trip to the beach involved a chair, a towel, a good book and a cooler full of beer.
Now: A spontaneous trip to the beach involves two hours of packing beach toys, chairs, blankets, umbrellas, lotions, two changes of clothes per person, diapers, wipes, first aid kit, cooler with water, juice boxes, snacks, sandwiches, etc., etc., etc.
What about you? What are some of the differences in your lifestyle then and now? Leave me a comment and let me know!
