Earth Day 2012

It’s Earth Day 2012, and even though according to the Mayan’s we’re all screwed in a matter of months, I am still doing what I can to help save the Earth just in case we’re all still here December 22nd.

Even though my kids are little I try to teach them about the importance of recycling, how we can conserve energy, and the importance of doing what we can to reduce our carbon footprint.

Since my kids are all pretty little, this can occasionally be a challenge.  I was happy, however, recently when they asked to plant trees after seeing The Lorax.  It was great to see them take away a positive message from the film because we had a different result after watching the popular Disney movie, WALL-E,  when my then three year old son said that he, “wanted to hurry up and cover the Earth in trash so we could blast off in rockets and live in outer space with robots.”

*Sigh*

Kids can be so literal sometimes.  So I try to get literal with my message of going GREEN.

Of course this suit offers multiple uses and can be worn with just about anything, anywhere:

After my last post, showing off my super pale skin in an actual bathing suit (which proves I officially have no shame left), an outfit like this helps prevent sun damage and sunburns. It’s got 10,000% UV protection, plus I think I sweat off about 10lbs when I was wearing it (#winning).

Anyway, in honor of Earth Day, I’m recycling these Green Mom photos which, if you’ve been following me a while, may look familiar.

If you want to learn more about Earth Day activities, and want to help make a difference, check out Earth Day Network for some great ideas.  You don’t even need a green man (Mom) suit to do it!

  1. We did not do a whole lot for earth day this year. Living in the UK we have GREEN-RECYCLE-OR-DIE in our faces every day so this seems redundant. We did plant some runner beans and some peas and cleaned up litter from our park. I have a hard time remembering that 4/20 is earth day and not that other thing. Even after all these years. NOT the message I want to send my kids.

  2. Can’t believe your son wanted to cover the Earth in trash – precious ! My daughter helps keep her carbon footprint small by eating trash.

  3. We missed Earth Day because half the family was sick, but now I wish I’d worn a green bodysuit. I think it’s great you’re teaching your kids this stuff. My daughter loves to pick up trash to throw away when we’re out walking, but we could still work on the water conservation thing. She’s only 5, though. She’ll get it.

    • We joke that my kids were power plant owners in a former life. They LOVE to leave the lights on in every room in the house….and the water? Brushing teeth takes 20 minutes, washing hands takes 10 seconds. Where’s the balance?

Hope you’re house is feeling better…mine is sick now …blah!

  4. ha,ha. I love the outfit. Happy Earth Day!

  5. We have yet to see The Lorax! I’m disappointed in myself. I hope it has such a positive effect on my son as it did on yours! That’s great.

Love the outfit. Can’t help but wonder what the other people at the beach were thinkin’ when they saw that!

    • The Lorax is great, but I’m a huge fan of anything Seuss.

And I think most people were stunned/confused/baffled. I try to do stuff like this and get the hell out of there before the shock wears off.

  6. I’m sure you concur with Kermit the Frog; “It’s not easy being green.”

  7. so funny! that green suit on the beach is killing me:) your kids must love your sense of humour and i love that you love parenting! that is very apparent from your blog! i look forward to following your blog!

  8. LOVE the suit. Hilarious.

  9. You’ve made me green with envy =)

Also. I still haven’t seen the Lorax… perhaps I’ll take my kids this weekend. I’m not looking to plant any trees however.

  10. For Earth Day, my 7 yr old daughter and I spent the entire day without electricity and we didn’t use our car. We went for a long walk(over 6 miles!!) and just enjoyed not having a schedule to worry about. When it got dark, we lit candles. It was so relaxing and fun that she now wants to do it once a month!

  11. Our kids came home from school with trees from a business in the area. So we planted them. Last year we had a 50% success rate – one died (because I ran it over with the lawn mower on *accident* ) and one is flourishing……wondering how it’ll go this year…..

Your green suit rocks – ran a race in October where people wore those for the entire 10 miles!!!!
