Labor Day used to be one of my least favorite holidays simply because it was our unofficial end of summer.
These days I try to look at the positives. Sure summer is over, but there’s so much to look forward with the arrival of Fall.
Here’s just a few examples of why I’m kissin’ summer goodbye and welcoming this Fall with open arms:
1. Back to school- We’ve reached the point in the year where the long summer days, full of family bonding, are starting to get on everyone’s nerves (not just mine). The kids are fighting more with each other, I’m tired of acting as referee, and I’m running out of constructive activities. My kids started back to school last Monday, and if yours haven’t started back yet, it’s probably happening this week….and it’s okay to be a little happy about it (like I was last week)!
2. Daylight Savings Time Ends- Most people aren’t going to be upset about gaining an extra hour in their day when we “Fall Back” on November 2nd, the end of Daylight Savings Time. Although it’s an adjustment for my kids when we both move the clock ahead and behind by an hour, this is definitely the better of the two. Even if you’re somewhere that doesn’t observe the whole (stupid) process, the shorter Autumn days means the sun will be setting sooner, and it will be far easier to get kids into bed earlier…at least mine fall for it.
3. Fall Fashions- No, I’m not talking about the Fall Fashion Trends you see on runways, I’m talking more about the general apparel changes that the season brings…long sleeves, sweaters, and can I get an “Amen!” for long pants? My razor and I have more of a long distance relationship during these colder, covered-up months. I like to think shaving less is also good for the environment- not shaving my legs daily helps me conserve water each time I shower. Shave Less, Save More. That’s my slogan for the season. You’re Welcome, Mother Earth.
4. So long, Swimwear! – Speaking of seasonal apparel, after months of failing (without really trying) to get the perfect bathing suit body, I can finally give up on this yearly disappointment. Deep down, I must just be hoping for a miracle because I don’t seem to diet and/or exercise at all, yet I’m somehow disappointed that every time I squeeze into my swimwear and expect a result different from this:
5. Fall Food- The cooler weather leaves me wanting to warm up with a variety of foods that I typically pass on making during the sweltering summer months. Casseroles, soups, and plenty of baked goods warm my house (and soul) on cool Autumn days. Oh, and two words: Halloween Candy. It’s a parent’s job to taste test and check each bag for potential safety hazards for our children. I find it’s better to be safe than sorry too, so if you’re unsure if it’s alright, eat another just to be certain. Sometimes a parent’s job is never done (or at least that’s what I tell my kids when I’m taste testing just one more Snicker’s bar).
Are you sorry to see summer go? Looking forward to Fall? What do you look forward to most from the season? Leave me a comment and let me know!
LOL All good reasons and I love them all too! I can especially relate to the bathingsuit and candy ones….wait a minute, I see a connection there! LOL I love the fall too, because the weather is just plain ‘nice’! No more sweating, bad hair days and showing skin! LOL HAPPY FALL!!!
School is baaaack, yeeeehaw! Sweaters, crockpots, the fireplace going. Birthday season in our household. We have four birthdays between October 2nd and December 28th…wait, I thought the summer was crazy… Maybe I’ll rejoice after winter break.
I love summer here! We have one more month before our first snow fall and I work at a preschool and when it snows we have to stay inside. The more days where the kids can be outside the better. The end of summmer means more inside activities that I have to come up with and I’m proably the most non creative left handed person in the world! But yay for my winter wardrobe, my warm fuzzy boots, and winter foods like you referred to
I love fall and miss the East coast this time of year. I miss the smell of fall. Here in NM everyone claims we have 4 gentle seasons all in one day. Liars. There is nothing gentle about any of our seasons and they do not occur all in one day.
I also rejoice that bathing suit season is over and that I can shave less. That is wonderful.
Not to sound like a complete stalker, but last night I dreamt that I was buying the latest season of “Divine secrets of a Domestic Diva” on DVD. I’m not usually psychic, but maybe that stuff just starts randomly, right?
I love what fall does for my senses. The colors, smells,
Tastes, etc. The only thing I don’t like is the darkness
By 5:30.
By the time we finally get to each new season Here in VA I am excited! Call me crazy!
Wearing jeans and sneakers again without falling over dead from heat exhaustion!
I totally celebrated two kids going to school. Now there is only one in daycare! Buh-bye bathing suit I’ve had since I gave birth to #2!!! Sayonara RAZOR! (well, at least for anything south of the belly-border!) Hello there cute fall porch & house decorations. Hello soup, grilled sandwiches, hot toddies & my fuzzy boots! Oh, and HELLO MY DARLING EARLY BEDTIMES!!!
Not to get too serious, but given the circumstances of my last week…fall also signals the end of hurricane season for us here on the gulf coast. It’s much easier to live here in the fall and winter!
I live in the ice box of the USA- Minnesota. Summer is for sure over here, the trees are turning already. (the drought has not helped things). This is the time of year I get allergies. Just nasty allergies. I am always happy then, for the first killing frosts and no more pollens. Also, the mosquitoes and biting flies can quite honestly ruin your whole summer. when you can’t even DO anything outside, what is the use of warmer weather anyway???
Anyway, I like winter, no more constant yardwork. Winter is time for movie days on the weekends, the harvest is done!! No more weeding and watering! I rather like Winter.
absolutly LOVE this article! You hit every point as to why I love Fall and when I tell people this they think I am crazy! Thanks for letting me know that I am not the only one
Kudos!
One word…Hoodies! I have missed my hoodies and scarfs! Bye-Bye summer…HELLO Fall/Winter!
Love this!! Fall is my favorite season. As much as I love summer fun, I look forward to getting back into a regular routine.
By the way – You definitely wore it better
I can’t wait for boots, and Halloween candy and not having to turn the air conditioner on high so that I can have a third or fourth cup of coffee.
I love fall for so many of my own reasons (except back to school because that means my 2-month vacay is over!!!) but I love some of your reasons!
I will be happy to say good-bye to yard work! Ellen
Bahahahaha, this post cracked me up! I especially love the swimsuit montage
Fall is also great because us moms no longer have to justify wearing sweatpants everywhere!
Lolololol, you posts always crack me up!! Love the bikini shot!
1. Yay! Back to School! It actually happened here in August, so I’ve been happy about that for a while but I’m with you.
2. Ha ha ha, I’m in Arizona. We don’t do the whole clocky-changy thing. Thank goodness, because that crap always used to screw me up.
3. Not are you only saving water during Fall Fashions, but you are also saving money at the store as those razors are not cheap little things. What the freak are they made from? Gold?
4. I managed to avoid all swimwear related events this summer, without hurting anyone’s feelings.
5. I love all the warm-up-my-house food! But I have a four-year-old who HATES casseroles. Poop.
Loving the part about not shaving your legs…I wore capris the other day and basically shaved up to where my pants started.
Fall food. I love it!
You crack me up! I’m happy to see summer go for the blazing hot heat (in texas at 100+ temperatures) which leads to less clothing which leads me to your reason 4. I am in the same boat and because of the heat, many people walk around in swim wear type clothing or skimpy outerwear that is actually less of that of a swimsuit.. (the short shorts and neon mid drif bearing tanks and of course they go bra-less as well…wouldn’t come together as an outfit if not for the lack of undergarments)
