If you follow me, you’ve undoubtedly heard me talk about Ilana Wiles of Mommy Shorts. You may remember the post I did about The Mommy Show which she hosts, or maybe you’ve tried to help me narrow down a favorite entry (or twelve) in one of her Epic Baby Hair Contests! I may have also bragged a little about being on this year’s keynote panel at BlogU with Mommy Shorts (along with Baby Sideburns and People I Want to Punch in the Throat)! It was surreal to be sitting on stage with three amazing bloggers that I myself admire.
I was obviously excited when Mommy Shorts recently asked me to share a glimpse of #MyMondayMorning as part of her “Morning Series.” Although not humorous like those Epic Baby Hairstyles, I still have been following this series since it it started.
It began when last year when Ilana did a photo shoot for Well Rounded NY with lifestyle photographer,Raquel Bianca to document her morning routine. Much to her surprise, many people responded negatively to the shoot saying it was basically to perfect to be an accurate representation of a real working mom’s morning. She said that the beauty of the photographs surprised her as well, and that she had initially been afraid to do the shoot because she was worried that it would reveal what her mornings really were— “chaotic, disorganized and unenjoyable.”
In an effort to show moms that there is beauty in every mother’s morning, even though they may need an outsider to see it, she and Raquel started the “Monday Mornings” series on Mommy Shorts. Last year they documented five mothers in the NYC area and now Allstate is sponsoring the series so they can feature mothers across the country. Most recently they have posted about three mothers in Chicago with nine more moms in LA, Houston, and Washington DC who will be featured in the coming weeks. Each mother was selected based on written entry alone with no photos of themselves or their homes.
In her post where she details the series (you can read that here), Ilana says, “The goal wasn’t to make their mornings look crazy or messy or comically awful. The goal was to show that even amidst the chaos and the crumbs, even when you don’t pick up all the toys and you’ve got syrup stains on your mismatched pajamas, there is still beauty. In fact, the real moments, the ones that really represent your life and your family every day, are probably the most beautiful.”
Just as words don’t do these posts justice, neither do my photos (which were NOT taken by a professional photographer), but just for kicks my husband snapped a few photos at breakfast.
#MyMondayMorning typically starts before the kids, if for no other reason so that I can brew just one cup of coffee while it’s quiet.
I didn’t even remember doing this, so I can’t say for sure if I was pretending to answer the banana or if I really thought someone was calling me on it. I was only about 1/4 of the way through my first cup of coffee, so it could go either way.
Summer mornings are a little less hectic with the kids being off from school, but I still work from home with my day starting as soon as I get up. This is me multi-tasking…or looking at funny cat videos.
Once I wrangle all three kids to the kitchen table, I drink my once-warm coffee in the adjacent room, but usually not without company.
Don’t judge the series based on my homemade pictures, head over and check out the series on Mommy Shorts. I’ve really loved the entire series thus far because it shows you the joy in the simple, rushed moments of our mornings. And sometimes we all need that reminder…at least I know I do.
Since Allstate is the nation’s largest publicly held insurance company and in the business of protecting what matters most, I love that they’re helping mothers across the country capture those often overlooked family moments in the “Monday Morning” series. Catch up on the ones you missed, and don’t miss the next nine – I know I won’t!
Would you ever consider having a photographer capture your Monday Morning? Have you followed the series? Any favorite “mornings” so far? Leave me a comment and let me know!
