I had the extreme pleasure of reviewing some new bed linens from BedVoyage, maker of Eco-Luxury Bamboo Linens. The average person spends about 1/3 of their life in bed, but because I am a mother to three small children, my time in bed is significantly less in duration but even more important to me. I try to make my bed a place where I can relax and recharge for the next day. I typically buy sheets that have no less than 600 thread count and my softest set is 1000 thread count and made from cotton. Imagine my surprise that the set of BedVoyage bamboo sheets were significantly softer than my 1000 count set! I have been using them for over two months and they have also not shown any signs of pilling or fading. These super soft sheets are a dream to sleep on, and in warmer weather still helped me feel cool, and now that our nights are colder, I am enjoying the warmth they provide. They have a heavier feel which I think just goes to the quality of the sheet, and the only thing I need to do differently as far as care is change the heat settings in which I wash/dry. To keep the sheets looking and feeling great it is advised to wash on cold and dry on low. A warm iron can be used, but I’ve found that as long as I remove them from the dryer as soon as they are done, any wrinkles fall out on their own. Oh, and I should mention we were able to receive the travel set of sheets with a patented one piece system where the flat and fitted sheets were sewn together. I was a little unsure how I’d feel about this, but it is easy to put on the bed, and has also kept me from searching for my top sheet on the floor in the middle of the night! The travel set also comes in a super soft bag to store your linens (flat & fitted sheet plus two pillow cases), and a laminated sign for housekeeping if you are using for travel in a hotel letting them know these are your personal sheets and not to take them (clearly, they’ve thought of everything). The sheets for my bed were in a King size, and we were also sent a one piece set in twin for Joey to try out. Unlike myself, Joey hasn’t yet had the pleasure of luxury sheets…until now. I’m not sure whether to thank or curse BedVoyage because Joey seems to be sleeping better, but complains if I put any other sheets on the bed. He asks for the “pillow” sheets which in Joey speak, means he thinks they’re soft and comfy. For his twin set the only difference was that it came with one pillow case instead of two. One thing I have noticed, aside from Joey generally sleeping better, was that I have seen an improvement in his allergies as well. Often times he would wake and be sneezing in the morning, and I had even recently tried vacuuming the mattress, buying a new mattress pad and washing his curtains to kill any dust mites. I think these sheets may also be aiding his allergies, so for that I am extra thankful.

Lastly, I was sent an adult travel blanket. My intention was to initially give this to my son Jake who has several blankets that he uses each night. Now that he’s three years old, I was hoping to swap out his “Pooh Bear Blanket” which is actually part of his nursery bedding. After feeling how soft this blanket was however, and not wanting a battle over his “blankie,” I decided it would be best if I just used it. I feel like a kid again…I originally had the blanket in my family room and was using it as a throw, but the super soft blanket was soon discovered and was being hogged by the rest of the family. Now, in addition to my soft sheet set, I have this wonderful blanket in my room at night as well…and I don’t even feel bad about it. Every once in a while I think it’s okay to take something just for me! So join the club, Moms! Amber Shader Photography

Carolyn’s Kitchen Holiday Sparkle Apron

I know you all remember Carolyn’s Kitchen from our fabulous Dorothy Apron Review and Daisy Apron Giveaway at the beginning of the summer. The Dorothy Apron and Daisy Aprons are some of my favorites, but leave it to Carolyn West, the creative designer and aproness herself, to come up with some fabulously new fun and flirty styles just for the holidays. Again, I had a difficult time choosing between her styles for the Fall/Winter release 2010, given the choice between the Party in Pink, Tease Pots (love the name by the way!), Tease Cups, and Holiday Sparkle Aprons. In true Carolyn’s Kitchen fashion, these aprons are sweet and sexy with a vintage feel. Don’t let the word “vintage” fool you though! These fabulous aprons are not something you’d find in your Grandma’s kitchen. Carolyn’s aprons have been described as aprons that “enhance the merriment of playing whimsical dress-up combined with the indulgent delights of naughty pin-ups.”

As much as I loved the tea pots and cups (sassily named “Tease Pots and Tease Cups), I decided to go with one of the holiday aprons. Although the Party in Pink was fabulous, I went with the Holiday Sparkle this time around. I also love my Dorothy Full Apron, but this time, in a deliberate attempt to be different, I decided to go with the half apron style. My Holiday Sparkle half apron, pictured above, has a a multitude of different Christmas trees on it (red, white, pink, etc.) in their own fabulous styles (striped, polka dot, etc.). As with any half apron, it ties in the back, but the front is also graced with a big red bow with white polka dots. The same pattern of red and white polka dots adds some sass in a garter style bunching towards the bottom of the apron and also is used as the frilly bottom trim. I cannot wait to have my first holiday party of the season! This, and all Carolyn’s aprons, are made in the USA, are machine washable, and are easily ironed. Rhonda Shear Intimates

I was able to try several items from Rhonda’s Intimates Collection and I am very excited about finding a brand that meets my needs! First, I was a bit hesitant about trying the “Ahhh Seamless Bra” (and matching brief) because as a larger chested woman with three children I would never (ever, ever) even pick up a bra to try on or purchase without under-wire in it. I wondered if a “normal” woman my size would be able to pull it off without wire, but to my delight, it not only fits, it’s also supportive and so comfortable! The matching briefs are fantastic too, and have come in handy with tighter pants (no seams showed at all).

After liking the Seamless Bra so much, I knew the VaVaVoom Push-Up Bra would be a hit too. Pictured above in nude, but I received mine in black. It’s soft, sexy and comfortable. In addition to under-wire, it also has two removable pads which I choose to take out. This bra has been great as one to wear with day to day clothing as well as dressier clothing for a night out (even though those are few and far between).

The Sweet Pea Lace Cup Butterknit Gown was another pleasant surprise from Rhonda’s Collection. Again, without under-wire I was worried about how the top would fit, but it was perfect! The top is lightly padded and the front has a floral lace overlay but the back is sheer lace. The bottom flows nicely and is a silky material that is flattering, sexy and comfortable. I was also pleasantly surprised to see the MSRP on this is only $36. It feels expensive!

Lastly, God Bless Rhonda for making a comfortable piece of shape-wear! Although, I’d prefer not to have to wear one of these at all, I have not yet committed to a fitness program and I would also prefer not to look “rolly-polly” in my clothing either. So this holiday, before I begin my New Year’s Fitness routine, you may see me out and about and think I don’t need to tone up all that much…but I’ll share my secret. I’m probably wearing Rhonda’s Sweetie High Waist Mesh Longline. It shapes the tummy, hips and thighs…and how! Plus it’s not something you wear to look good and feel like you are suffocating. It’s breathable, comfortable and makes me look thinner than I actually am….have I mentioned I love my Rhonda Shear Intimate Collection yet?

The “No Muffin Top” Skirt

Alyson Clair, vintage inspired fabulous fashion designer, is forcing me to go out. No really, she is. Alyson recently sent me a beautiful pencil style skirt in red that she created and calls the “No Muffin Top Skirt.” This skirt fits so well, is so flattering to wear, and is just all around so fabulous, I need to find somewhere to wear it! Out! This can’t be something I keep hanging in the closet and only wear on special occasions. I would have killed for a skirt this fashionable, functional and fantastic when I was working. I have no less than eight pencil skirts in my closet and not one has the feel or look as Alyson’s. Although, it does not have a super high waist band, it is just high enough to prevent one of the worst fashion faux pas- the muffin top. After being graced with three children in five years, this unsightly fashion faux pas is something I worry about with snug clothing. Did I mention Alyson’s skirt is tight fitting? It is worn the way a pencil skirt should be worn-snug. It’s also double knit and has a heavier feel so don’t worry about showing anything other than your curves.

The Rough Rack

The last page is a delight to little ones when there is an actual chirping sound from the book! Lastly, for Joey, now five, I choose a Dr. Seuss classic, “If I Ran the Zoo” where the funny and unforgettable Gerald McGrew thinks about what kinds of animals he’d have in his zoo.

For the DVD’s I chose the Scholastic Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories which has 28 beloved children’s stories that are faithfully adapted and brought to life in this 4-DVD collection. PLAYMOBIL has a made an exceptional toy with the Fire House as part of the Adventure Heroes Rescue set. The large doors allow the fire trucks to enter the garage, there’s a large tower, and my boys favorite, the fire pole for the fire fighters to slide down. It also comes with a small fire truck, two figures and a ton of little accessories. Be sure to keep little ones (under three years old) away from this due to choking hazards. Jumbies

The Jumbies story goes something like this: there were hundreds and hundreds of storks flying around, delivering animal babies all over the planet. They had to deliver more and more, faster and faster when all of the sudden they began crashing into each other! The Clarus line from US Acrylics is a real breakthrough in beverageware! This beverageware which is produced in the USA is made from triton copolyester which is durable, clear and totally safe (BPA Free). Although it has the feel of acrylics, it has the look and appearance of glass. In fact, until you pick up the Clarus’s products in your hands, you wouldn’t even realize it wasn’t glass.

This durable yet affordable beverageware is perfect for someone like me. I have three kids (ages 5,3,1) who have broken more glasses than I care to count, but I never buy acrylic or plastic beverageware for two reasons. First I don’t like the look of them. Picture It Books

To put it simply, Picture It Books are books that allow the reader to illustrate stories for themselves. You may be surprised to learn this, but I loved comic books as a kid. That being said, I was so excited to review comic books from KiZoic. KiZoic makes comics for today’s kids. We received multiple comic books quickly from Kizoic and my oldest son was in heaven. This was his first introduction to comics and he was blown away by the number of full color photos on each page. Although he is just learning to read, knowing many of the characters, he was using the illustrations and reading aloud to himself.

Erno Laszlo

Anti-Aging Skin Care

Dr. Erno Lazlo was a Hungarian dermatologist that developed a number of revolutionary products, first, starting back in 1927. Dr. Lazlo was the first to develop sunscreen, products with PH balance, products formulated with water for oily skin, products for teens, facial products for men, and the first to prescribe skin care rituals. Back in the late 1930′s he settled in New York City and has had some of the world’s most beautiful and famous women as clients like Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, and Jackie Kennedy to name a few. After launching a retail line in the 1960′s thousands of women have been able to enjoy his marvelous products.

After speaking with an Erno Laszlo representative I told them as a woman in my late twenties (alright fine, early thirties), I am concerned mostly with keeping my skin looking young and to target the two fine lines slowly appearing on my forehead. I was sent three items to try all from the TranspHuse line: the TranspHuse Night Serum, TranspHuse Topical Deluxe, and the TranspHuse Eye Cream.

Now let me preface my experience with the Erno Laszlo products by saying that I have tried four or five anti-aging products in the past from brands like Oil of Olay, L’Oreal, Clinique, and other similar makers. I have tried facial scrubs, day cream, night cream and eye treatments all with varying success. Some caused my combination skin to break out, others left me terribly oily, and some even dried out my face. I never felt like I saw a noticeable difference in my skin’s general appearance or in the two fine lines slowly making themselves a home on my forehead. Although I did research the Erno Laszlo line prior to accepting the offer to review the product, I still assumed that I would not see a difference.

I began using all three products as directed and to my delight 5-7 days after my first application my fine lines (okay, wrinkles) on my forehead had disappeared. That’s right, they are gone. I used to joke and say I was going to get botox for my 33rd birthday this summer, and now, apparently, I won’t have to even joke about it anymore. I was curious to see if perhaps these products were causing swelling or something that would create the illusion that the lines were gone, so I stopped treatment for a few days. The lines were gone, and so that it stays that way, I am back to using the TranspHuse night serum and eye cream daily and I have begun using the TranspHuse topical every other day (which by the way can be worn under make up).

I’m not going to pretend to understand the science behind it, but here’s the TranspHuse description on the Erno Laszlo website:

“Suzie Bitner was Afraid of the Drain”

If you have children, or you yourself are a child at heart, then don’t miss this wonderful book with 124 marvelous and humorous children’s poems with over 100 illustrations all by author and illustrator Barbara Vance. Suzie takes us to her world where we explore everything from the day to day to the wild and wonderful. My children especially enjoyed “Dear Santa” where there is a list even longer than those my boys have this year, “Sandwich Sister” where a girl turns into her favorite food (PB&J), and my oldest really likes “My Brother is Driving Me crazy” where the younger imitates the older brother (a common occurrence around here). Personally, one of my favorites is “Night Dreams” and “Ode to Sugar Flakes.” My children (from the youngest at 17 months to the three year old and five year old) have enjoyed exploring the different poems, listening to the rhymes, and laughing along as we go.

Barbara’s poems and illustrations are fantastic and take me back to my childhood reading (and loving) books by Shel Silverstein. They have the same lyrical and humorous feel and they really engage the children. Barbara Vance, who by day is a university professor, may not yet be a household name when it comes to books, but I imagine she soon will be. It warmed my heart to hear my five year old rhyming to himself after we read several poems. I know that I can still recite poems I learned as a child, and I love that my children are developing that same love of reading. Although, with a book like “Suzie Bitner was Afraid of the Drain” it would be difficult not to want to read more (which is what I hear when we’ve been sharing this book, “Just one more, Mom! Please!”).

I have always bought my pillows from department stores, and it seems no matter the brand, I end up hating the pillows after a short time. It was my assumption that all pillows were made the same, and no matter the cost you would still need to fluff and try to reshape the pillows sooner or later. Disney has done it once again with the new movie “Tangled!” Not surprisingly the Rapunzel toys are one of this year’s hottest items. I received the Baby Rapunzel Doll with Accessories, and I know any fan of the movie “Tangled” will love this doll. The doll itself is soft and huggable; her dimensions are 6x3x12, and her arms and legs can be posed into different positions. She comes in an adorable gown, sure to please any princess lover, and each Baby Rapunzel comes with three accessories: a tiara, a brush, and a magical rattle that lights up when you shake it! My daughter just loves this doll, and she especially enjoys brushing Rapunzel, and her own, hair!

This National Geographic Children’s Book, The Classic Treasury of Childhood Wonders, is absolutely remarkable. The book is authored by Susan H. Magsamen who is an award-winning writer and advisor on family and children issues with a special interest in creativity and learning. Her books and programs have been called “a beautiful celebration of family life, empowering parents and children to connect with each other.” The book itself is broken into five sections: Magic and Make-Believe, Outdoor Exploring, Crafts and Construction, Yummy for the Tummy, and Bedtime, Bathtime, and Dreamtime. Each section is filled with beautiful artwork, poems, activities, and ways for parents and children to explore the world around them. Honestly, this is one of the most thoughtful books I’ve come across in some time, and I cannot wait to continue to read, share, and explore it with my children. Love My Tush Jeans

My daughter, a future diva, recently was given some of the BabyDreams Children’s Jeans & Clothing’s “Love My Tush Jeans.” These jeans are specifically designed to look just like jeans, but they are designed to allow baby to sit, crawl, and walk all without the uncomfortable stiffness, gapping, and buttons in standard baby denim jeans. They are available in sizes 6 months up to 2T, and there are eleven adorable patterns to choose from; we sampled the “gold denim,” and I think we’ll be purchasing either the “pink leopard” or the “Dots” for our next purchase.

I’ve never liked buying regular jeans for my kids when they were babies or toddlers because I personally do not find jeans comfy. It’s also apparent that standard stiff denim makes crawling, walking and playing generally more difficult, and so I always opted not to put my kids in jeans. My daughter is also adorned with her mother’s rollie-pollie thighs and regular jeans didn’t always fit well. My daughter doesn’t have to worry anymore. Now, with the help of Love My Tush Jeans, there’s plenty of room for her little diaper and those chubby thighs too! the fabric is noticeably soft, even after washing, and it also did not show any apparent shrinking after being washed/dried. She moves very freely in the Love My Tush Jeans, and I love that the pants carry the look of denim with a yoga pant feel. We’ll be ordering more for her soon; I just wish I had found them sooner!

Alphabet Kids

The Alphabet Kids book series were created by Allegra Joyce Kassin, who is a devoted mother of five and grandmother of seven, who, through reading with her children, noticed a lack of children’s multicultural books. With the assistance of six culteral experts (one for each of the current books) along with Emmy Award and Parent’s Choice Award winning co-author, Patrice Samara, the Alphabet Kids book series was born.

Each of the current six books in the Alphabet Kids series focuses on a different culture. There is Allegra who is Italian-America, Elana who is Hispanic-American, Isaac who is Jewish-American, Oni who is African-American, Umar who is Arab-American, and Yang who is Chinese-American. Each book not only explores a different culture, but each book also teaches a valuable life lesson. The each of the books features approximately 24 brightly colored pages, and is targeted for children 2-8 years old, although they have also had positive reviews from kids as old as 12. The books ultimately show children that we can be different (and embrace and celebrate those differences) and still be great friends.

Both of my boys, ages 3 and 5, listened intently and asked questions about the characters and “new words” they were hearing in the stories (there is a handy “New Words” section on the inside of the back page for help with pronunciation and definitions). My daughter, who is 17 months, also sat and listened, enjoying the illustrations. My boys also inquired about their own cultural backgrounds which took a bit more explaining (they’re Italian-Irish-Polish-Scottish-English-French-American)!

What happens when you take the weirdly wonderful writings of internationally known best selling author Lemony Snicket and bring the story to life with world renowned artist Maira Kalman? You get “13 Words,” a book where Snicket takes 13 seemingly random words and spins a tale that takes the reader through a wild and wonderful day. Some words my young reader knew like Bird, who is our central character, Dog, Hat, Cake and Baby, and others he learned as we read like Haberdashery, Panache, Despondent, and Mezzo-Soprano. The story itself is silly, weird and I think fantastic, and my kids enjoyed it too. The 40 pages of brightly colored phenomenal illustrations art work was wonderful to explore as well. Based on the popular book series, Guardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn Lasky, the epic tale of courage and friendship centers around a young Barn Owl who learns about a legend of a mythic band of winged warriors who fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil, and dreams of one day joining these heroes.

If you haven’t read the books or seen the movie, I encourage you to do so. This is a fantastic movie that kids and adults are sure to love! The movie stays true to the story, and the awesome special effects bring Kathryn Lasky’s words to life!
