This past summer I took my daughter with me to the pharmacy, and of course she had to wear her silver sparkly shoes with her pink and white polka dot sundress. She also wore a set of big red beads and carried a gold sequin purse…because, come on, it’s all about the accessories. Personally, I love when she picks her own clothes and wears Easter hats in October, and other people always seem to have a similar reaction.
As we checked out of the pharmacy an older woman behind us in line whispered to me, “She is a little darling! I love her outfit!” to which I explained I had nothing to do with it. This fabulous attire was all Cecilia. The kind older woman smiled and said to her, “Oh my! Aren’t you the prettiest little princess!” to which my daughter yelled at the top of her lungs, “I no princess! I the pirate Cecilia!” The poor old woman actually jumped as my daughter corrected her and was only able to respond with an “oh dear...”
This is the result of having two older brothers. She does love dressing up and looking like a princess, but she loves acting like a pirate too. She plays with dolls but also with dump trucks. I have no issues with this, and even though I was the oldest child in my family growing up, I also only had boys my age to play with in my neighborhood. Instead of Barbies, I preferred GI Joe and instead of playing house, I went for games of Army tag. It’s all good in my book.
So on Halloween, I wasn’t too surprised to see my daughter change her mind last minute about her costume. Friday for Jake’s preschool parade and party, she did dress up as Jessie the Cowgirl from Toy Story :
But Monday morning as I was looking for a costume for myself, she came across Jake’s old dinosaur costume. As soon as she saw it, Jessie the Cowgirl was a distant memory. She wore the dinosaur costume around the house all day, to town for her Joey’s big parade and party, and of course she also wore it out for trick or treating.
When she was at the parade she saw another little toddler dressed as a dinosaur and she spent ten minutes growling at him. When she was trick or treating she did much of the same to anyone who asked what she was for Halloween followed by yelling, “It’s dino time!” Her brothers, who went as the Super Mario Brother’s told everyone she was Yoshi the dinosaur from the game. So here’s my Nintendo crew:
Even Berkeley had fun, even though he stayed home and helped me pass out candy and didn’t do any trick or treating:
So here’s to kids that march to the beat of their own drum! I hope you all had a great time Monday, and those of you who had to postpone trick or treating because of the snow, have fun this weekend. I’ve been sweating chocolate for two days now…this business of “checking” candy is no joke!
