Monday morning, while trying to down my first cup of coffee, I found myself the beneficiary of a concert being played solely by my 3rd grader on the recorder – or as parents everywhere come to know it – the devil’s flute.
As with many other interactions a parent might find themselves in – a discussion on Minecraft or Pokemon, for example – on the outside you say things like, “Wow! Sounds great! Keep practicing!” but on the inside you’re crying, “What did I do to deserve this on a Monday morning before coffee?!”
And sure, learning an instrument is wonderful, but is the recorder really a legit instrument?
Has anyone ever been moved by a performance on the recorder?
Perhaps it’s just the recorders in this house, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard one that was in tune either. God knows that when I played (and I use that term loosely) as a kid, it was also not music.
It leaves me pondering this –
Music teachers: Saints or Sadists?
I’ll leave that up to you, dear reader.
Do your kids play any instruments? We also have a young novice on trumpet (send boxed wine and a case of Excedrin). Leave a comment, I love hearing from you!
