I’m someone who watches too much Dateline is concerned about home security. With three kids, a husband who sometimes travels for work, and a tendency to worry, making sure my home is protected is of great importance to me.
We do have a security system with Vivint, and it’s something that has helped me sleep better at night knowing all our doors and windows are armed plus they monitor for smoke/fire and carbon monoxide. My anxious heart gets great piece of mind from this. They even have indoor cameras which I can view right from my phone.
What we didn’t have was an option to see what was happening outside.
Then I found out about Ring™ Video Doorbell. I had seen their commercials before, but after seeing videos from real Ring customers on my local police department’s Facebook page, I knew I had to give them a try.

We’ve now had our Ring™ Video Doorbell installed for a couple weeks, and it’s really an amazing piece of technology and home security for a low price. First of all, installation was easy which means of course that my husband didn’t yell, curse or throw any tools while getting it going. You can install it anywhere using the rechargeable battery that’s included, or like we did, it can be hooked up to an existing doorbell. They have detailed instructions and videos to help with putting it up, and I think we had ours up and running in about 20 minutes (and it only took that long because our doorbell faced an awkward direction).
Once our Ring™ Video Doorbell was installed and the app was downloaded, we went through and set up our account. First up was the motion settings which allow you to select anywhere from 5ft to 30ft from the camera. I was initially worried that we’d be alerted for shrubs or tree branches within the camera’s range, but Ring utilizes infrared technology that looks for heat signatures so it’s able to identify people from plants. Pretty cool, huh?
The Ring™ Video Doorbell captures and records all motion and rings to the bell and alerts you on your smart phone or tablet. You can view it live or go back in the app and view past video clips. For a small fee you can also buy cloud storage, which we opted to do, for either $3 per month or $30 per year.
Within the last two weeks alone, I can’t believe how often I’ve used this camera. Since I work from home, I’m typically pantless busy, and don’t always want to get up to see who is at the door. I’ve managed to avoid solicitors for lawn services, magazines, and a politician! This thing has already paid for itself! I’ve also been able to tell the delivery guy I’d be right there, and another time, while I was out at the store, I asked FedEX to put my package by my garage door – right from the frozen food aisle!
This camera also has night vision, it records in wide-angle HD and you always get a clear picture of what’s happening at your home whether you’re there or not to see it. And no one will know if you’re there or not as you speak live to your visitors! This would also be great for parents if you’re waiting to see kids get home from school while you’re away or at work, and you can also see who they’re letting into the house while you’re gone (sorry teenagers, no boyfriend/girlfriends sneaking in while your parents aren’t there)!
Best of all, unlike my security company’s option, these cameras are certified for outdoor use and you get a Lifetime Purchase Protection – so if it’s stolen, they’ll replace it free – and you’ll have a nice little HD video to give to the police!
Ring also offers a Stick Up camera, which is also $199, same price as the doorbell. I wish I had known about Ring sooner because this price, and it’s small monthly cloud storage fee, is much less than I’ve been paying the last two years for my indoor only cameras with Vivint.
