Celebrate National Soup Month with “Soup Day” by Melissa Iwai

Celebrate National Soup Month

with “Soup Day” by Melissa Iwai

This week 49 of our 50 states had snow on the ground…and Florida was our only snow free state, but they weren’t spared from the cold weather either! I bet most people would agree that there is nothing like a warm hearty bowl of soup to beat the cold winter weather. And did you know that January is National Soup Month?

Award-winning illustrator Melissa Iwai celebrates a trip to the local green market, a quiet afternoon at home, and the joy found in making a pot of homemade goodness in her new picture book Soup Day . The idea for the book was born from Melissa’s time spent in the kitchen with her son Jamie and the special bonding and learning experience that came from it.   From choosing the vegetables to picking the pasta shapes, the journey of cooking homemade soup is filled with small learning lessons that are incorporated in a subtle way. Sound, smell, taste and touch combine to pepper the text with the swirl-and-whirl of broth, vegetables, and spices. Carrots become circles, onions become squares, parsley becomes confetti. Yellow onions, white mushrooms and green zucchini sizzle and celebration of cooking as a means of spending time together and creating something delicious and healthy in the process. A starred review from Kirkus praises Soup Day as “Ordinariness made extraordinary.”The book’s theme of sharing in the process of making a meal together continues as the author shares her own “Snowy Day Vegetable Soup” recipe at the back of the book.

You can purchase the book here on amazon Soup Day (Christy Ottaviano Books) and be sure to check out Melissa’s awesome food blog, The Hungry Artist, for more ideas and recipes for cooking with kids! And this week one lucky reader will now have a chance to share and create a “Soup Day” of their own!

The Short on Susan

Back when I was a child, I never dreamed of becoming a blogger…. In part because the internet didn’t exist in 1983, and also because I had an aptitude towards becoming a Muppet and/or Solid Gold Dancer. Sadly those dreams never came to pass, but after I decided to stay home with my kids, I discovered a love for blogging. Find me sharing my perspective on the lighter-side of parenting, and even more humorous musing other places around the web by subscribing to my social channels below:
