Suburban Haiku: A Review & Giveaway

You know, there are some things that I think people just can’t fake. Two of those things are wit and humor, and my friend Peyton Price, author of the smart, funny book Suburban Haiku: Poetic Dispatches from Behind the Picket Fence, proves it in just over 140 pages.

Her clever observations from suburbia are laugh out loud funny, clever, and at times even unexpected. I read the book over a week or so while doing one of the most suburban things there is – wearing my yoga pants, drinking my afternoon lattes while sitting in my SUV in a carpool line waiting for my kids to get out of school.

The book is perfect for the busy Mom who has trouble sitting down and finding time for herself to do something as selfish as reading a book – hell, I’m lucky if I can sneak a bathroom break alone. With Suburban Haiku you can pick it up and put it down a hundred times and still find enjoyment in stealing a quick read.

As I mentioned her witty writings made me chuckle often, sometimes without warning, and delightfully startled other suburbanites who happened to be within earshot. It would be impossible for me not to relate to so many of the haikus in this book, which also are not as easy to write as one might think. I’ve only done it once myself…I much prefer reading Peyton’s poetry which she seems to do with such ease. Here’s a few I loved from the book:

The Short on Susan

Back when I was a child, I never imagined of becoming a blogger…. In part because the internet didn’t exist in 1983, and also because I had dreams of becoming a Muppet and/or Solid Gold Dancer. Sadly those dreams never came to pass, but after I decided to quit my job to stay home with my kids full time, I found an undiscovered love for blogging. Find me sharing my perspective on the lighter-side of parenting, and even more humorous musings other places around the web by subscribing to my social channels below:
