Georgia Patchwork Quilt

 

I have been searching for new King sized bedding for a long time. Last year I made this mistake of buying a set based mostly on the low price, and not two months later I had a torn, worn low quality bedding that I’ve been ready to trash ever since. Last month I searched in stores and online for a set that would help me transform my bedroom into the space I’ve been wanting. I looked in department store after department store, shopped at bedding outlets and yet I kept coming back to the same bedding that I had seen in the Pottery Barn catalog.

Pottery Barn has always been one of my favorite stores and I shop there probably more than my husband would prefer, but I’ve actually never purchased bedding from them. I have purchased tons of decor (I love their ever-changing holiday and seasonal items), lamps, window treatments, pillows and even furniture. I’ve actually been a Pottery Barn customer for over a decade and I appreciate the quality of their products. Pottery Barn items might not always be the cheapest as far as the price, but given the quality of the merchandise it is worth paying a little more knowing you have something that will last and last.

So once I decided on a Pottery Barn bedding set, the only issue was picking the collection I wanted to buy. The decision was a close one between the Breton Patchwork Organic Quilt, the Butterfly Poppy Patchwork Quilt, but ultimately decided on the Georgia Patchwork Quilt. This fabulous quilt and shams (I got two of the Standard and the two of the Euro shams) arrived quickly and was just as shown on the Pottery Barn website and catalog. Unfortunately, for those who like to shop in stores (not me by the way), this is only available online or through the catalog. The quilt isn’t heavy or bulky and will be perfect for warmer weather. Right now, I’ve added a blanket between the sheet and the quilt for extra warmth. Georgia Patchwork Quilt is made of 100% cotton, is hand stitched and the yarn is dyed for long lasting color. Another great feature of the quilt is that it is machine washable.

I wish now that I had made this purchase last year and saved myself some time, and made my room into the space I was hoping for much sooner. I am 100% satisfied with this bedding, and I know this will be something I have for a long time. The only possible drawback would be the size of the quilt. For my standard king sized bed it is a perfect fit, but for those with a California King it may be a bit small. Also worth noting is that the sham pillow inserts are sold separately for 24.00 at the time this review was written.

As I opened the ordinary looking cardboard shipping box, suddenly a golden light illuminated the box from above. A choir of angels began to sing, and I asked my UPS Man, “Is this heaven?” He just smiled and replied, “No, it’s Delaware, but what’s in the box is heaven, Handbag Heaven that is.”

Okay. That didn’t really happen, but you’ll feel like you died and went to (handbag) heaven when you check out yet another fabulous store from our friends at the Affordable Style Network. Spring Hill Nurseries

 

 

 

The beginning of Spring, for me, doesn’t start until I start my planting and flowers start blooming. When I go to plant new flowers or begin to prepare my current plants and garden for Spring, there is one place I have trusted time and time again, Spring Hill Nursery. I was introduced to them about four years ago when I moved into my current home just after it was built. The nice thing, yet sometimes difficult thing, when moving into a newly constructed home is the landscaping. I’d never had such a blank slate to work with, and was only a novice gardener. Knowing some of the soil was composed of clay, I was also nervous about putting a lot of money out for plants that might not do well.

Spring Hill Nursery gave me the confidence I needed to begin my landscaping and gardening project. Their catalog and website are full of information on the different flowers, what type of soil they need, how much sunlight, what zones they thrive in, for reasonable prices, and best of all every plant they sell comes with a Lifetime Guarantee! Search as I might for the “fine print” I never did find it. When Spring Hill sells you a plant the ensure you will love it. If the plant dies, no matter why it died or when it died, they will send you a replacement plant, offer an exchange for another plant or send you a refund check. Over the last four years I’ve tried my hand at a variety of plants. Nearly every plant I’ve purchased has turned out successful, but I have had a handful that didn’t fair well for one reason or another. Actually, each season, for four years, I’ve had to call for a replacement for at least one plant (don’t judge, I have about 50!), and the representatives at Spring Hill have always been great.

One thing you need to be aware of, when ordering from Spring Hill, is that most of the plants that are sent are young. Some are also sent while the plants are dormant, so they might not appear like they’re not healthy, but they are actually “sleeping.” Each shipment comes with a planting guide, so all you need to do is read the enclosed information on how to plant your items. If you want something that will grow quickly, just check the item’s detailed description which has information on each plant’s growth rate. Most of my items have taken a full season to really go from looking good to wonderful with the exception of my favorite flowers to date, the Red Freedom Hedge Roses. These roses were small, only 3-6″ tall when I first received them, but by the end of the year they had grown to nearly 2.5′ tall (and wide). These roses are bred to resist disease and were not bothered by a single insect last year. They also had beautiful blooms that lasted until the end of November. Everyone from my mail carrier to strangers walking dogs would comment how beautiful they are. I cannot wait to see them reach their full potential this year (their second season), and fully expect them to reach 3′x3′ as described (they provide a beautiful small hedge).

Some of the other plants that I love from Spring Hill are the Butterfly Bushes (which in their second year reached nearly 7 feet tall), the mini-hollyhocks, gaillardias, and leyland cypress trees. This year I purchased some of their gigantic mums, daisies, asters and a rose of sharon hedge for one side of my property. All these plants and you would think I was a millionaire. Not quite. But Spring Hill does have great prices and they offer wonderful coupons (like 25.00 off of 50.00 order).

Trunkettes Swimwear

 

It’s about this time every year that I begin to look for a new swimsuit for the summer. The process is usually a long, depressing, and expensive venture that leaves me feeling defeated. Ultimately I am forced to see my body for what it really is and exactly what I’m left with after having three kids in four years. The reality for me is that even after losing nearly 60lbs since my last child almost two years ago, my body just isn’t what it used to be. For me, I end up buying a new suit that remains half covered most of the time that I am at the beach or pool. I have been shopping not only for a suit but also a wrap to cover my hips, thighs (especially) and my rear.

This year, I’m happy not only that I’ve found a new bathing suit so early in the season, but I’ve also found one that suits my body type. Trunkettes Swimwear has filled a huge gap in the women’s swimwear market with their innovative swim trunks for women. Now, before I get into that, Trunkettes actually has suits sure to please women of any size and shape. All in all, excluding the one piece style, Trunkettes offers a dozen different bottoms to choose from! They have small bikini styles to short-shorts to knee length styles. I was very excited to try my own Trunkettes swimsuit and decided to go with the “Leg or not to Leg” style in the navy and white floral and dots. The “Leg or not to Leg” is made of fast drying spandex, has adjustable side drawstrings, a built in bikini bottom liner (which makes it still feel like a regular bathing suit bottom), and an adjustable drawstring waist too. When I tried them on I was delighted at how comfortable they felt, or rather how comfortable I felt wearing them! These not only will help me feel more confident on the beach, but are also built for beach play too. With three kids, I don’t get much time to just lounge in a chair sunning myself. I’ll be more comfortable building sand castles, digging for sand crabs and chasing my kids on the beach.

For the top, I choose the Teeny Tankini which will allow me to show off a little, but still cover the spots I want to keep to myself . It too is really really comfortable, is made of the same material, and also has cute drawstring sides. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about is the lack of underwire. I think all suits of a certain size should be wired. However, the halter-top design should keep the girls in place, I just prefer it for extra comfort and control.

Overall, I can’t express how satisfied I am with this suit. Not only did I receive it through the mail and like it, I am going to buy a second suit. Trunkettes has given me a cute alternative to wearing a wrap (or got forbid a skirted suit-I’m still 3o years too young for one). So this year, when you start your swimwear shopping, I suggest starting here first!

It has a hook-and-eye front closure which I prefer (as I was able to get into it without assistance).

So, if you’re like me, and your body is still in “winter condition,” fear not! With Vedette Shapewear you’ll still be able to get into that Spring Dress you’ve been dying to wear. Once I put on my Juliane corset I was able to wear one of my favorite dresses and feel fabulous about it, but more importantly I could still sit, move and breath in it is as well! What would Spring time be without a little Spring cleaning? Some of you might be cringing, but for me it’s actually one of my favorite times of the year. I dedicate a week to getting the house scrubbed top to bottom. You can’t use just any old rag when you’re undertaking such a mammoth task, so I was delighted to receive the above photoed items from Scrub Strong.

I’ll start with my favorite product which saved me a ton of time on a chore I absolutely HATE! The Copper Mesh Scourer with Handle made cleaning my grill a breeze! Last year I went through three regular kitchen sponges and it still didn’t appear “clean.” A little soap along with the Copper Mesh Scourer and it was looking like new! Also is great on un-coated, steel or cast iron cookware. I also received the two pack of the Copper Mesh Scourer without a handle which worked just as well, but the handle definitely helps with tasks like grill cleaning!

The Multipurpose Wipes were also awesome and came in a pack of four. These are safe for all surfaces (besides also being super absorbent). They have been great on my wooden kitchen table, for drying dishes, and I even used one to clean my baseboards!

The Heavy Duty Scour Pads have worked great on pans with cooked on grease and I also used some in the bathtubs with some Comet. The scour pads are so effective it wasn’t really even necessary to scrub hard and the tub was still shining like new!

Many of my pots and pans are made of Stainless Steel and the Stainless Steel Scourers were able to get the pots and pans clean without scratching or damaging them.

All Purpose Extra Heavy Duty Antimicrobial Treated Sponge was awesome. It’s built to outlast other sponges is “heavy duty” and is safe to use even on non-stick surfaces!

Georgia Custom Gift Baskets

 

 

 

 

 

 

  I recently was invited to attend The Real Charitable Housewives of Delaware’s latest event, Help Japan Bloom Again, which raised money for victims of the tsunami through the American Red Cross. I had a number of items that I was going to donate and Lorna, owner of Georgia Custom Gift Baskets, kindly offered to donate a custom item just for the occasion.

The custom tub, which she designed just for me, had black and white polka dots on a large red plastic tub. She put the words “Domestic Diva” on the front of the tub and added two ribbons on the handles that were black with white polka dots. In the photo above she demonstrated the size by putting in towels. Unfortunately, my camera broke and I can’t get the image at the actual event, but once it’s fixed I’ll update the photo. The custom tub and other gifts raised nearly $200 at the silent auction so a special thank you to Lorna and all the other Sponsors who donated items.

She saw a tub that she thought would be perfect for me that a friend of hers (who I didn’t know) had posted on her page. She attached the picture of the “Domestic Diva” tub from Georgia Custom Gift Baskets and said “I saw this and thought of you!” Turns out it had been shared a few times and eventually reached my friend. I had no doubt the tub was perfect for me now!
