As you may have heard, there is no way to truly prepare for Motherhood. However, there are some truths that may make you feel better about some of the situations you might find yourself in once you become a parent. Now, not all these truths are exactly universal, but other experienced parents can probably tell similar tales.
As a member of Luv’s MotherBoard, I’ve been able to share some personal experiences with you before, and now I’m going to be sharing some of my own #RealMomTruths. Although this won’t fully ready you for all that motherhood will bring, it’s through the comradery with other moms that we thrive (well, that and through copious amounts of caffeine)!
22 #RealMomTruths:
1. In the beginning you may think that you’re an unwilling participant in a study on sleep deprivation, but try to remember, it’s only parenthood.
2. After successfully potty training your kids, some of your friends will look to you as an expert which is funny though, because you come out feeling more like a survivor.
3. You never knew that ‘brushing someone’s hair while they ran away’ was an actual life skill, but now you know it’s actually a really valuable one to have.
4. A diaper explosion can ruin your day, and it’s especially frustrating when you spent more dollars thinking that you’d get a better diaper. You really need one like Luvs, that won’t leak, and is also more affordable.
5. There are no sick days when you’re a Mom, and the worst part isn’t even having to take care of everyone else when you feel lousy. No, it’s the peeing your pants when you sneeze.
6. At some point you will play the dreaded parenting game, “Find that Smell,” and realize quickly, there are no winners.
7. A bandage and a kiss from Mom can cure almost any bump, scrape, or boo-boo imaginable.
8. You haven’t read a novel in a year, but you did read the same board book 27 times so far today.
9. Spend enough time with small children, and you will lose your capacity to have an adult conversation. You will undoubtedly find yourself asking another grownup questions like, “Do you know where I can find the potty?”
10. Every day is laundry day.
11. When talking to a toddler, no means no…also, no may mean yes; furthermore, no means maybe. Good luck.
12. You have become a human tissue…and you’re okay with it.
13. You might notice that after an extended period of time in footie pajamas your kids feet will smell like corn chips. This is totally normal (probably), so no need to call the on-call doctor to inquire about the baby’s snack-smelling sleeper’s feet. A bath and a new pair of PJ’s and the kiddo will smell like new…until the next diaper change anyway!
14. According to a toddler, the way you cut a sandwich could render it inedible. For example, you chose to cut the bread into triangles, but they wanted squares.
15. Cold tater tots that you eat while standing over the sink doesn’t sound like a sad dinner, it sounds like a typical Tuesday night.
16. If my family was ever in an emergency situation where there was a shortage of food, we could live for at least a week on old dry cereal and stale crackers from the bottom of my purse, under the cushions on the couch, or the nooks and crannies of the family car.
17. Toast will land jelly side down 100% of the time.
18. Everything is so sticky!
19. In motherhood you’ll find you never knew that you could sleep any less or possible love someone more.
20. When a mother sits down, a silent alarm sounds inside a child’s head. This alarm lets them know to find the mother and immediately start making requests for juice, snacks, entertainment, etc.
21. Baby Proofing can seem a little extreme at times like toilet lid locks – really? That is until you start fishing socks, pacifiers or crayons from the toilet anyway.
22. The only two things toddlers are willing to share freely are germs and your age.
