Back to School Shopping with RetailMeNot (Plus Visa Gift Card Giveaway)

September 9, 2015 by Divine Secrets of a Domestic Diva

Does back-to-school shopping feel like Christmas come early?

No, I’m not talking about the joyous anticipation that parents feel sending their kids off to start another school year! I mean, does back-to-school shopping for your family feel just as expensive as shopping for the holidays?

With three school-age children, I know back-to-school shopping is a pricey endeavor! In years past, I’d find myself meticulously searching through weekly store circulars, trying to find the best deals. I’d clip coupons, which I’d most likely forget to bring to the store with me, and despite my best efforts, I’d usually end up spending more money—and time—than initially intended.

Then a couple years ago, while searching online to see if I could sell one of my kidneys to pay for another year’s worth of school necessities (ha), I stumbled upon RetailMeNot.

Eureka!

Now, if you’re not already familiar with RetailMeNot, I’d first like to welcome you out from the rock that you’ve been living under, and I’d give you a little information about the site. Brace yourself: RetailMeNot is not a couponing website; RetailMeNot is the couponing website.

Here are a few reasons why RetailMeNot has been a long-standing favorite of mine for back-to-school, holiday and everyday shopping:

  • RetailMeNot has coupons for all of my favorite stores. Whether it’s an online or in-store shopping trip, I know I can find a discount code or coupon on the site.
  • RetailMeNot has offers that I can’t find on other coupon sites.
  • RetailMeNot has coupons that actually work when you go to use them. How frustrating is it to search and search for a deal, then you finally think you have one, and you go to use it online—or worse, in the store—and it doesn’t work? Well, that’s not a situation I find myself in when I use RetailMeNot. And should a coupon or code have restrictions or problems, it’s always noted along with advice to help you avoid any issues should you not meet the deal’s requirements.

I mentioned that I used to forget my clipped coupons, and really that hasn’t changed. Personally, I prefer using the RetailMeNot website for my online orders, but now RetailMeNot has an equally free and amazing app that allows you to find deals right from your phone while you’re shopping in stores, and you don’t even need to clip—or remember—any coupons!

This year, I did some of my ordering online, but for the bulk of my shopping, I went to my local mall. I had seen some great coupons while I was doing my online ordering, such as one to The Children’s Place for 25% off your entire order, which I printed and promptly forgot. No worries, though, because I had the RetailMeNot app downloaded, and all I had to do was show the cashier the same coupon on my phone.

Thanks to the great sales and the coupon code from the RetailMeNot app, I was able to save nearly $200 on all the clothes that my 8- and 6-year-old will need this fall and winter!

Next, while I was still at the mall, I checked my RetailMeNot app to see if any of my other favorite stores had deals on back-to-school gear for my oldest son, who is already in young men’s clothes. I found two deals at JCPenney, which is a store that I had put in my RetailMeNot app’s “favorites” list. You can also look for deals in the app based on your current location, stores you’ve bookmarked and by category. Or you can preview deals RetailMeNot has selected just for you, see the current best sales on the app or find daily deals!

Thanks to two coupons from the app, I was able to get my oldest and pickiest son some cool T-shirts (he loved the retro Nintendo, Atari and NASA tees especially), pants and a jacket. Best of all, I saved another $94!

Before I left the mall, I hit up one last store for a few things for myself … I figure I earned it! I made out on the last day of a big sale at Old Navy and saved another $47!

For anyone keeping score, thanks to RetailMeNot, I saved well more than I spent: a whopping $340 on all my back-to-school clothes in just one trip!

So the next time you do any shopping—online or in stores—be sure to check online at RetailMeNot.com and get the app so you can save in stores wherever you go!

The Short on Susan

Back when I was a child, I never imagined of becoming a blogger…. In part because the internet didn’t exist in 1983, and also because I had dreams of becoming a Muppet and/or Solid Gold Dancer. Sadly those dreams never came to pass, but after I decided to quit my job to stay home with my kids full time, I found an undiscovered love for blogging.
